The attendees of the 2010 Gothic Summit in Victoria, BC were given the opportunity to tour Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria. David Barlow hosted the tour sharing his extensive knowledge of the building and its history. He and his assistant Peter showed us parts of the cathedral that people normally are not permitted access to - thank you gentlemen. Below enjoy some pictures from the tour.
We would like to send out a special thanks to Martin Segger and Anthony Welch for sharing their expertise about R.R. Bayne and to the ladies of the Maltwood Gallery for facilitating a lovely gathering after the conclusion of the conference. We would also like to express our gratitude to David Barlow for sharing his extensive knowledge of Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria and to his assistant, the caretaker of the Cathedral, Peter, for granting us access to the rarely seen vaults and flying butresses. Finally, an emphatic thank you to this year's conference organizer Barry Magrill - you've done a spectacular job.
Today concluded the conference portion of the 2010 Gothic Summit. This year was a glowing success with exceptional speakers presenting cutting edge architectural research. Besides the papers, the summit granted those attending several unique opportunities, including viewing an extensive collection of drawings held in the Maltwood Collection by the 19-century architect R.R. Bayne, which was followed by a lovely wine and cheese at the Maltwood Gallery of UVic.
In addition to this attendees were afforded the rare privilege of touring Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria. During this tour we were allowed to explore above the 100-foot high stone and brick vaulted ceiling and unexpectedly were lead out onto the roof where we could examine the flying buttresses up close. This unique experience made the Summit a truly special event.
